JXCKY

About
JXCKY is the independent music project of Melbourne-based Chinese-Cambodian queer artist Jacky Chen. Through music and creative projects, JXCKY creates spaces for LGBTQIA+ people, particularly Asian and People of Colour communities, to feel seen, represented and affirmed through his music. The artist project celebrates queer identity, individuality and self-expression while sharing original stories and experiences that challenge stereotypes, validate the experiences of queer Asians and foster a stronger sense of belonging.

JXCKY is recognised for his fearless authenticity as a queer Cambodian-Chinese artist from Melbourne’s western suburbs, using dark pop, songwriting and performance to create visibility and representation for the LGBTQIAPN+ community. Through his music, he explores vulnerability, identity, relationships, grief and personal growth, sharing the complexities of his lived experience to help others feel seen and understood. As one supporter explains, “JXCKY has such a unique way of storytelling through his songs.” His work challenges stereotypes and brings perspectives that remain underrepresented in the Australian music industry into the spotlight.

Beyond his own artistry, JXCKY is a dedicated advocate, mentor and supporter of emerging queer creatives. Supporters describe how he is “always the first person in the front row at release shows, fundraisers, and community events,” consistently showing up for local artists. Behind the scenes, he generously helps other queer musicians develop their voices through ghostwriting and songwriting support. During his time with Converse All Stars, he used his platform to create opportunities for other queer creatives, while continuing to perform at community events, including Pride at Footscray, Minus18 Queer Formal and Midsumma’s Victoria Pride. His commitment extends beyond the stage, using his experience and platform to ensure emerging artists feel supported, connected and encouraged to pursue their creative ambitions.

JXCKY’s contribution is reflected in both his artistic achievements and the practical support he provides to his community. He secured Creative Victoria funding to write and produce his concept EP A Body for an Eye and its accompanying music video, using the project to pay and provide exposure for collaborating queer creatives. His EP launch brought together more than 50 guests through music video screenings and stripped-back performances, while his performance at Juniper Care’s all-Asian queer lineup helped support other queer visual artists at a sold-out event at No Vacancy Gallery. He has also partnered with Lifeline Australia to include crisis support information on his merchandise and participated in the Out of the Shadows walk to raise awareness of suicide prevention. Through his music, mentorship and ongoing community involvement, JXCKY demonstrates how creative expression can become a powerful form of advocacy, connection and hope.
