Kitty Obsidian

Kitty is recognised as “an outstanding performer and teacher in the Burlesque and Drag space over the past 12 years.” They use their platform “to storytell, not only as an Aboriginal performer but also to platform queer and trans rights, disability awareness and body acceptance/diversity,” creating work that centres representation, education, and inclusion across the arts.

Supporters highlight Kitty’s commitment to advocacy and mentorship. They are described as “passionate about mentoring young queer performers and making sure they are supported in the industry,” having “mentored many young LGBTQIA+ people both in the performing area and in general life.” Kitty also “does a lot of advocacy work to bring performers into spaces that they are not traditionally accepted in,” including performances at the NGV, while continuing to represent “at the local, national and international level.”

Kitty’s leadership is shaped by lived experience. They “embrace diversity in body forms and storytelling through performance,” have “had to overcome a variety of disabilities,” and are often “the only BIPOC person in performances or a person with a disability.” Proudly representing as an Aboriginal person, Kitty is recognised as “one of a very small group of diverse trans disabled performers that represent our mob,” bringing important stories to wider audiences and fostering inclusive, safe spaces grounded in education and acceptance.

Description

Kitty Obsidian is a proud Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi Aboriginal trans artist, activist, and educator. Described as "aggressively queer," they are a fAboriginal, disabled, and fat performer whose work fiercely advocates for mob, BIPOC, disabled rights, body diversity, and sex worker justice.

Through performance, community education, and corporate training, Kitty creates transformative spaces that centre marginalised voices and lived experience. Their work affirms, mentors, and uplifts LGBTQIAPN+ communities — especially those living at multiple intersections of identity.
